それにしても、本書を読んで認識を新たにしたのが、アラブの大富豪たちが、いかに最高の「民主主義の敵」としてすごいのかということ。彼らが暴君だからではない。その逆だからだ。彼らはその富を気前良く民衆にも配る。中東産油国に税金はなく、社会資本もすべて王族が面倒を見てくれる。権利はないが、それ以上に義務もない。そして王族に優れたものがいれば、民主主義のややこしい手続きなしですぐに辣腕を発揮できる。
