１０月１日以来、ファッションの中心地パリは「ユニクロ・ショック」に見舞われている。この日、「ユニクロ」がヨーロッパ髄一の商業地であるパリのオペラ地区に、ニューヨーク、ロンドンに続き世界で３番目となる旗艦店をオープンしたのだ。開店以来、大勢が行列を作る賑わいを見せている。

　この熱狂ぶりは、01年にエルメスが銀座に店をオープンしたときのことを思い出させる。パリっ子がどんなに我慢が嫌いかを知っている人なら、寒いなか彼らが並ぶのがいかにすごいことか分かるだろう。さらにすごいのは、この店が開店する数日前まではヨーロッパ大陸で誰も「ユニクロ」なんて知らなかったということ。ユニクロは少しずつ、非欧米企業としては初めてにして唯一、世界規模の生活用品ブランドになりつつある。このような例を、私は他には知らない。
