『ギャバン』から3年後、村上の元にアメリカから1通の手紙が届く。差出人の名はポール・バーホーベン。自作の映画の主人公に、ギャバンのデザインを引用させてほしいというのだ。
「東映伝いに私の名前を聞いたようです。その頃、バーホーベンは日本ではほとんど無名に近い監督でしたが、『構わない。どうぞ』と返事をかえした。金銭のやりとりは一切発生させていません」
　ギャバンをイメージソースとしたハリウッド映画『ロボコップ』は、87年に公開され世界的に大ヒット。バーホーベン監督の出世作となる。
