Google が Flash Player プラグインを取り込むのは、「Flash vs. HTML5」という狭いジョブズアングルの話ではなく、ウェブブラウザそのものの進化のために 新しいプラグインアーキテクチャを必要としているから。ブラウザのプラグインモデルはネットスケープ時代に溯るだけに互換性や利便性、セキュリティなどで制限が多く、Google は Adobe や Mozillaと協調して次世代ブラウザプラグインAPIの策定へ取り組んでいます。今回の Flash Player プラグイン取り込みはその第一歩という位置づけ。

次世代ウェブへの流れという開発者視点はさておいても、なにかと脆弱性が見つかるFlashの面倒なアップデートを意識することなく常に最新版が使えるのは単なるユーザーにも便利な話です。また Google にとっては今年登場するChrome OS ネットブックや、出さないわけがない Chrome OS タブレットを「フル」のウェブ対応デバイスとして宣伝できるという狙いもありそうです。
